The tournament was held at Havelock North High School and was a great indication of the tennis talent in our region.

In the Boys A Grade there were many strong contenders for the title with a lot of matches going to tie breaks. In the end the Central Hawke’s Bay College pair of Sam McConville and Mitchell Bray played some fantastic tennis to beat Havelock North High School in the semi final after being down 5 -1. They then beat the Napier Boys High School pair of Nic Meo and Robbie McIvor to win the final, in another hard fought victory. Central Hawke’s Bay College tennis coach James Fraser was delighted with the outcome that saw the boys hard work and talent rewarded.

The Girls A Grade was tightly contested with the Napier Girls High School pair of Harriet Roil and Emma Stevens eventually coming out on top. This pair beat Hastings Girls High School in the semi; and were too strong for Maia Leicester and Kate McLean of Havelock North High School in the final. This was a great result for the Napier Girls High School pair who dropped a match early in the day, but recovered to win the title.

In the Girls B Grade, Arna Wattie-Scott and Susy MacCallum dominated the final beating the Napier Girls High School pair of Rebecca Collier and Jessica Elliffe 6 – 0. Over 20 Secondary Schools competed in the competition that reinforced the strong talent and skill in touch in our region.

In the Girls Grade Karamu High School were too strong going through the competition unbeaten to win the title. Karamu scrapped through a tough final beating Hastings Girls High School, 4 – 3, in the last minute of the game. Napier Girls High School beat Central Hawke’s Bay College to come in 3rd after winning this competition last year.

The Boys Grade also had an exciting final with St Johns College coming out on top. Hastings Boys High School were leading the final at half time, but a strong second half saw the talented St Johns College team win 4 – 3. Central Hawke’s Bay College were to strong for Te Aute College in the playoff for third and fourth winning 6 – 5.

The promising skill of these junior teams means the Senior Competition in 2006 will undoubtedly be tough. This competition will start in Term 1 next year and will also be the qualifying process for the regional qualifying tournament.

Final Placings:
Girls:
1st – Karamu HS/ 2nd – HGHS/ 3rd – NGHS/ 4th – CHBC/ 5th – HNHS/ 6th – Woodford Yr 10/ 7th – Wood Yr 9/ 8th – Iona Sky/ 9th – SHC/ 10th – Iona Blue/ 11th – Iona White

Boys:
1st – St Johns College/ 2nd – HBHS/ 3rd – CHBC/ 4th – Te Aute College/ 5th – HBHS B/ 6th – Te Aute College B/ 7th – Karamu HS/ 8th – CHBC B/ 9th – HNHS Yr 10/ 10th – HNHS Yr 9

Cory Hutchings Visits the Bay!

Former World Champions IronMan Cory Hutchings was in the Bay during November to speak at the HBSS Sports Awards and as part of the SPARC Sport Ambassador Programme. Daniel Wallis continued his fine form this season by winning the senior title in 19:53 for the 6k course from the Hastings Christian School. Daniel won the East Coast cross country title in June and won the prize for fastest lap at the prestigious Round the Lake Relay in Wanganui just two days before his Hastings race. His only serious challenger on Wednesday was Havelock North's Ryan Woolley who put up a personal best 20m 1s in running second, eight seconds behind. Daniel and Ryan will team up this Saturday as their Napier Harriers team attempts to win the youth grade at Rotorua's Redwoods Forest Relay.
In Wednesday's senior race, Napier Boys' Steven Smith (21:01) was third, ahead of Aaron Kaijser (Havelock North), Ryan Smith (Napier Boys') and Glenn Barwick (Gisborne Boys') to give Napier the team title.

Michael Sullivan (Napier Boys') (13:42) out-stayed Lindisfarne's James Holden (13:54) to win the junior boys' 4k race. Taradale's Eric Speakman (14:08) was third and Karamu's Scott McDonald (14:12) fourth. Napier Boys' Cameron Poole-Smith (5th) and Bronson Meehan (6th) were next home to give the Napier junior boys the team title.
The year nine boys' 3k race went to Napier Boys' Jay Mason in 10m 16s from Havelock North's Neil Kotze who ran 10m 26s. This was a repeat of their one-two finish at the East Coast cross country. And at the national cross country in Wanganui in June, Jay finished fourth and Neil eighth, underlining the high standard of this pair. The group finishing behind Jay on Wednesday consisted of Neil, then Philip Ludwig (Gisborne Boys'), Brett Pulford (Hastings Boys') and Michal Muller (Havelock North), all breaking 10m 30s in an excellent race. Gareth Malan's eighth place gave Neil, Michal and Gareth the team title for Havelock North High. This trio, and Hamish Patrick (who was tenth on Wednesday) had won the year nine race at Virginia Lake two days before.
The girls' races featured a double by Taradale runners Ashley Aitken and Laura Nagel, both trained by Mick Cull. Ashley won the senior girls' 4k race in 15m 55s in an emphatic solo performance. She was always running comfortably, clear in the lead. Ashley was followed home by a group of four Havelock North High runners, Anouska van der Werff (16:14), Rachael Tolhopf (16:23), Leanne Harris (16:41) and Bianca Saathof (17:22) giving the Havelock North High girls the team title.
Laura Nagel won the year nine 3k race in 12:04 from Havelock North's Stacey Kennedy (12:22) reversing the result at the cross country in June. The much-improved Denise Tryon (Havelock North) was third. Victoria Tolhopf's seventh gave the Havelock North girls the team title.
In the absence of Hastings Girls' Laura Mohi and Dannevirke's Sheree McLean, the junior girls' 4k race was thrown more open. Laura's team-mate Katie Harris prevailed in an excellent race with just nine seconds covering the top four. Katie recorded 16:20 to win from Olivia Luxton (Havelock North) (16:25), Anieke Engels (Napier Girls') (16:26) and Catherine Brebner (Havelock North) (16:29). Courtney Denton-Giles (Gisborne Girls') was next from the Napier Girls' pair of Anna Paget and Lucy Cabot, giving Napier Girls' the team race. Fourteen colleges entered 153 runners at this year's road race.
Results
Year 9 Girls (3km):
L Nagel (THS) 12:04, 1; S Kennedy (HNH) 12:22, 2; D Tryon (HNH) 12:32, 3.
Junior Girls (4km):
K Harris (HGH) 16:20, 1; O Luxton (HNH) 16:25, 2; A Engels (NGH) 16:26, 3.
Senior Girls (4km):
A Aitken (THS) 15:55, 1; A van der Werff (HNH) 16:14, 2; R Tolhopf (HNH) 16:23, 3.
Year 9 Boys (3km):
J Mason (NBH) 10:16, 1; N Kotze (HNH) 10:26, 2; P Ludwig (GBH) 10:28, 3.
Junior Boys (4km):
M Sullivan (NBH) 13:42, 1; J Holden (LIN) 13:54, 2; E Speakman (THS) 14:08, 3.
Senior Boys (6km):
D Wallis (NBH) 19:53, 1; R Woolley (HNH) 20:01, 2; S Smith (NBH) 21:01, 3.

HBSS Junior High Performance Programme @ HBHS

Last week Hastings Boys High School junior students had the opportunity to learn what it would take to become the next Mahe Drysdale or Tana Umaga. As part of the Sport Hawke’s Bay elite athlete pathway, the Hawke’s Bay Junior High Performance Programme gives Year 9 and 10 students a snapshot of what it takes to be a professional, world class athlete. Talented local footballer Chris McIvor presented the session that covers goal setting, training methods, nutrition and sports psychology.

The aim behind this programme is to better educate our young athletes and to let them know that great things can be achieved through determination, hard work and passion. This junior programme is the first step of a pathway that also includes SPARC Sport Ambassador Visits and the Telecom HBSS High Performance Academy. With the fantastic results of Hawke’s Bay’s junior athletes such as Emma Twig and Westley Gough, Hawke’s Bay has been proven as a breeding ground for champions. Sport Hawke’s Bay hopes to continue this with this free programme that is available to all secondary schools.

Junior Basketball Champs Found!
The best junior basketball teams in Hawke’s Bay were found last night with the finals of the Hawke’s Bay Secondary School Junior Basketball Competition held at Centennial Hall, Napier. This year 21 boys teams and 11 girls teams took to the court in the revamped junior competition that saw teams from around the region competing against each other.

The boys final was an all St Johns affair with both their Junior A and Junior B teams qualifying for the final. However the Junior A side was too strong and they capped off an unbeaten season where they dominated each team they played. Under the guidance of teacher and coach Mr Leif Johansson the Junior A team have shown some great displays of basketball through the 10 weeks of competition.

The girls final was much closer as two talented teams came together for the first time. Woodford House who were undefeated in pool play took on Hastings Girls High School in a nail biting, epic of a final. Hastings Girls High School were too strong in the end and clinched a one point win with their excellent all round team play. This team’s achievement is a credit to the depth in basketball at the school, that teacher and coach Leanne Wilson has built up and established.

The Hawke’s Bay Secondary School Senior Basketball Competition Finals will take place on Friday at Centennial Hall and will see Napier Boys High School and Hastings Boys High School battle it out in the Boys Division 1 final for one last time this season. Also a rejuvenated Napier Girls High School team with take on the strong Taradale High School side in the Girls Division 1 final.

Telecom HBSS
High Performance Academy

This talented group of athletes are the first to be part of this programme designed to support and nurture our regions elite young sports people.
